A NOTORIOUS PIECE OF DEADWOOD HISTORY
The Fairmont Hotel’s Wild West Past
Built in 1898, The Fairmont Hotel became part of Deadwood's booming Gold Rush era, welcoming miners, gamblers, entrepreneurs, and travelers during one of the most colorful chapters of the American West.
The site itself has an even older history. In 1876, one of Deadwood's earliest recorded murders is believed to have occurred here. Just steps away, Wild Bill Hickok met his famous fate at Nuttall & Mann's Saloon No. 10, forever cementing the town's place in Old West legend.
Over the years, The Fairmont has served as a hotel, saloon, gaming establishment, and brothel, each chapter adding to the building's remarkable story.
The brothel era remains one of its most fascinating. Discover the people, history, and legends that shaped this unique part of Deadwood's past on our Historic Brothel Tour.
The Stories That Remain
Paranormal Investigations and Unexplained Encounters
Beyond its historical significance, The Fairmont Hotel has gained attention for reported paranormal activity shared by guests, employees, and investigators over the years. Many accounts center around unusual experiences throughout the building, particularly on the upper floors.
Reports include unexplained footsteps, voices with no visible source, shadowy figures, sudden cold spots, and other encounters that visitors have found difficult to explain. Some accounts have been connected to former residents and guests associated with the property, while others remain open to interpretation.
The Fairmont’s reputation has attracted paranormal investigators and featured appearances in productions including Ghost Adventures, The Dead Files, and Ghost Lab. Whether you visit out of curiosity, interest in the unexplained, or appreciation for the building’s past, the Fairmont Hotel Ghost Tour offers a unique opportunity to explore a place where history and mystery continue to meet.
